Kine Weekly said “The newest powerful ‘crooks slip out’ is peopled that have a colorful variety out of essential and you can arresting characters, and these, skilfully controlled of the publisher and director, permit the movie to help you tread water effortlessly. It is merely to your finish which actually starts to falter, however the smack-up finale rescues it from the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you may wisely dialogued, it will have no higher challenge from inside the life down its incredibly ugly term.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Motion picture Bulletin told you “The movie actions in the a fast speed, the fresh new dialogue is actually slick and you will characterisations fundamentally effective. Manhood Powell and Evelyn Keyes lead the new throw expertly, as the investigator are played with big aplomb from the see your face personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody throughout the The new Yorker listed “So it terse and taut film noir try based on the newest intimate and you may elite group issues of your identity reputation, the newest criminal genius (starred by the Cock Powell) about a snazzy unlawful local casino. The fresh film’s copywriter and you can manager, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess game, having mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a beneficial cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) did within gambling establishment and you may old good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic script, this new cast’s suavely managed body language out-of like and danger, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can smartly assertive photographs (as well as their political conscience) get this to pugnacious but really in depth spectacle a hidden classic of your own genre.” [ ten ]

Photograph has actually actions and you can anticipation, and you may particular small suits regarding laughs to incorporate flavor. Adept shows because of the Cock Powell, given that a playing house overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, because the an authorities inspector, together with up the get . While the plot pursue a common pattern, new characterizations is new as well as the performances adequate to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you may relevant, avoiding the sentimental, phoney contact. Uncommon digital camera bases come along once in a while so you’re able to escalate desire and temporarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling since director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, original creator and representative manufacturer, as well as aids in rendering it a soft design.” [ 11 ]

It is primarily an issue of viewing Mr. Powell undergo their paces stylishly while you are an enormous shed away from stars and you can actresses provide him conventional assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable little woman whom brings out the new finest in your and Ellen Drew is the easy and you may slinky vixen exactly who gets him on the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually greasy just like the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb do yet another able concert tour due to the fact a weary police inspector which finally shuts the fact. A great deal of consuming and you will smoking is completed of the all worried.” [ a dozen ]
